Aluksi hän toimi opettajana opettajien koulutuslaitoksessa Moshin alueella Pohjois-Tansaniassa, sen jälkeen hän toimi kouluttajana ja yhteisötyöntekijänä Luterilaisen Maailmanliiton kanssa ja sitten vierailevana professorina Dar es Salaamin yliopistossa.

Vuonna 1986 hänet nimitettiin Vuoden Naiseksi ja hänen kirjansa Transfer of Technology as an Intercultural Process valittiin vuoden tiedekirjaksi vuonna 1990. Samana vuonna hänelle annettiin Helsingin yliopiston perustajan kuningatar Kristiinan nimeä kantava Kristiina-palkinto. Marja-Liisa Swantz on viettänyt aikaa Hartolan Koitissa vuodesta 1988 lähtien. Anna Onali-Ovaska Marja-Liisa Swantz on ant­ro­po­lo­gi ja kehi­tys­maa­tut­ki­ja, joka on raivannut tietä molem­mil­le tie­tee­na­loil­le Suomessa.
